HISTORICAL WATERSHED TOUR:
Upper Basin: Mining Legacy, Restoration & Recovery with The Sierra Club and KEAOn June 13, a few of our fellows joined an Upper Basin Tour hosted by The Sierra Club and Kootenai Environmental Alliance (KEA) exploring where two regional stories meet: the heavily roaded Coeur d’Alene National Forest and the 1,500-square-mile Bunker Hill Superfund Site.
The tour began where the Spokane River is born, at Lake Coeur d’Alene, with a presentation by Coeur d’Alene Tribal staff. From there, the group traveled from Coeur d’ Alene to the Silver Valley, visiting the mining district and cleanup sites.
Lunch was enjoyed at the park in Kellogg learning about the impact of lead in the community and how contamination is remediated in yards and other spaces.
The group ended the day at the Cataldo Mission, Idaho’s oldest standing building, which overlooks clearcuts and the contaminated floodplain, reflecting on the history of the watershed and how to best move forward towards continued management, remediation, and restoration.
