LIVING LAKE PROJECT KICKOFF NIGHT

Welcome to the Living Lake Project: Kickoff Night We officially welcomed our first cohort of Living Lake fellows: in March ten artists from across the Coeur d'Alene Lake watershed will spend the next 15 months exploring how creativity can deepen our community's connection to the lake.

What the Fellowship Is
The Living Lake Project brings artists together with watershed scientists, cultural educators, and community stewards. Together, they will make environmental data more accessible, honor both Indigenous and western knowledge, and find new ways to invite people into lake protection. The fellowship spans Kootenai, Shoshone, and Benewah counties, and each fellow receives a $10,000 stipend.

What's Ahead
The fellowship unfolds in three phases:
  • Learning. Fellows ground themselves in the lake as a living system through lake science, mining legacy, harmful algal blooms, traditional ecological knowledge, recreation, stewardship, and climate change.
  • Research and project development. Fellows head into the field for basin and mine site tours, water monitoring, cultural experiences, time on the water, and lab visits, as their ideas begin to take shape.
  • Project production. Fellows create socially engaged, community-rooted work, made for and with people and place rather than for a gallery. The program culminates in a public sharing of their projects in 2027.

Throughout, we're asking fellows to show up consistently, engage openly with unfamiliar material, collaborate generously, and be willing to be changed by what they learn. As we like to say, if your practice expands, that's the point.

Who They'll Work WithFellows will be supported throughout the fellowship by a robust network of partners:
  • Coeur d'Alene Tribe Natural Resource Department
  • Idaho Department of Environmental Quality
  • University of Idaho / IWRRI
  • Basin Commission
  • Silver Valley EDC
  • Emerge
  • Idaho Conservation League
  • Kootenai Environmental Alliance
  • Museum of North Idaho
  • Many experts, artists, and cultural educators throughout the watershed

Follow Along
We'll share more about the fellows and their journey as the program unfolds.

We're excited to see how this cohort translates this complex information into accessible community-engaged projects.

The Living Lake Project is led by the Arts & Culture Alliance of Coeur d'Alene and funded by an EPA Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Grant.
